Blue Jeans a Wardrobe Haute Couture Staple

While popular blue jeans history seems to be American, its origin is accually from France and Italy.  This history is recorded in the names “denim” of Nimes (in France) and “jeans” meaning of Genoa (Italy) where jeans where first worn in about 1617…about 395 years ago.

American men and women have been wearing denim blue jeans since the 1800’s…cowboys and girls (Anne Oakley) wore jeans, but it was the 1950’s when Elvis Presley and actor James Dean would make jeans a national fashion trend.

The American classic Levi 501’s jeans worn by James Dean are still made the same was 1890 when rivets where added to the 506s jeans.

“I have often said that I wish I had invented blue jeans; the most spectacular, the most practical, the most relaxed and nonchalant…they have expression, modesty, sex appeal, simplicity…all I hope for in my clothes”, Yves Saint Laurent of Paris.
